Great Explorers

This experimental publication was inspired by my dad's adventures during the Camel Trophy competition. Throughout his time on the course, he kept a journal documenting the experience - my intention was to bring his words to life.

The competition took place between Tonga and Samoa. With this in mind, elements of the design aim to reflect Polynesian culture. The triangular format of the book is representative of the trochus shell symbol, which is found in many Polynesian patterns. It symbolises protection, which felt very relevant to the subject matter.

The way in which the book folds invites the reader to interact with it and explore the publication in different ways. It can also be folded into a cone shape, representative of the Ha'apai volcano that my dad climbed during his time in Tonga.

A recycled wetsuit was used to create a protective cover - a nod to the deep dives that were an essential part of the expedition.
